Is it a must do to prime oil filter on 4 stroke engines when breaking in the engine and subsequent times at each maintenence interval. Not sure having read somewhere that you must disconnect stop switch lanyard, start engine electrically for al least 5 short periods of time, or pull rope start same number of pulls for the filter to prime at slow revolutions, then connect stop witch lanyard and start as usual. If it's true, what happens if you just change oil and filter and start engine without priming filter ?

Re: Priming oil filter

Not sure how the filter is mounted on them, but I always prime my filter by filling it up before mounting it. I do this on cars as well. That way you are not spinning the engine over with no oil in there. Some factory oil filters also have a back flow valve in them, so you can even fill them up and still mount the filter upside down. Either way I have found that to be the best way to prime a filter and be sure it has oil in there when you fire it up. I would still turn it over with our coils unplugged, or however you do it, on a first time fireing.

Plainly agree with you, these filters are screwed at a vertical position to engine side. If the filter can hold oil inside with no spills while screwing them will be just fine.

The Tohatsu 9.8 and lower does not use an oil filter. The 15/20 and 25/30 do. They do not require any special priming after a normal oil change, though it would be reasonable to crank with the stop switch activated for a few revolutions to speed up oil delivery to the galleries. The oil pump is pretty robust, and fills the filter in a few seconds.
