Re: printer cartridge

have you ever replaced the cartridge? did you use hp or did you use a generic? if generic you need to buy one from hp. that should solve your issue if not throw away buy a new printer. im a copier tech that works on everything. it will take more to fix than to buy a new replacement especially if you search the net.

Re: printer cartridge

It just started saying that? I bet one (or more) of the cartridge contacts is dirty.

Try a q-tip with some alcohol to clean the contacts in the printer and on the cartridge.

Re: printer cartridge

^^^ What kei9th said. HP, Epson and Lexmark are notorious for making chipped ink cartridges. If the chip errors or, oh my, you buy a non-name brand replacement, the printer will detect the abnormality and refuse to print. They do this to sell their printers dirt cheap (they can even sell at a loss) and require you to pay crazy prices for ink (something you buy over and over).

Brother makes a decent printer and accept any cartridge you throw in it. No chips, just a tub-o-ink. I buy my Brother ink in bulk for $1/cartridge off ebay. Sure beats the $18 HP charges. Just remember the printer will cost more, since they are trying to profit off the printer, not the ink.

I went laser a few years ago and have never looked back. If you don't print regularly with ink jets they gum up. Hate 'em.

Re: printer cartridge

i would tell you to try another cartridge but it can be a costly purchase to find that it dose not work. just a warning to anyone thinking about refilling the old ink never do it it will eventually destroy your machine, by eventually i mean pretty quickly and you can have quite a mess. cgd7777777 do you print in color often? if not i would suggest getting a printer that uses a toner cartridge, they are cheaper and last longer some are customer refillable.

I've wanted to move to color laser for a long time, but have always cheaped out. Considering how little I print nowadays I really should make the switch. I used to be worried about toner usage, but now one shoudl last a good long time. Heck, I haven't bought paper for a loong time, so that should tell me something. I always have the dry ink issue with my inkjet.. it sucks :(

Re: printer cartridge

A few years ago, a local Big Lots was selling the Universal brand Black and Color refill kits at $7.00 each. Each kit would do 5-6 refils, depending on what brand cartridge was being refilled.

I bought a bunch of those kits and am still using them today.

The instructions, the tools needed to refill are pretty good. The ink is a good quality.
The cleaning solution provided is good, too.

I found I could refill the HP black cartridges about 5 times before they quit working.

The Canon black cartridges were the easiest to refill. I have one Canon that's been refilled about ten times and it keeps on running.

The HP color and Canon color cartridges were a problem after refilling. Could only get two or three refills. And occasionally, would not work after the first refill.

The best way to refill, IMO, is to do it as soon as the warning message appears or if the print starts fading. Stop the printer, pull the cartridge, refill and replace. Usually it works. I tried storing refilled cartridges, but had problems getting them to print again.

Before I started refilling, it was sometimes cheaper to buy a new printer (or the same price) than a cartridge set. Ended up with a stack of good printers.
