Sorry its so long just trying to give all the info I can. I was having some issues with my65 9.5 , it was not quite reach wot and the rpm would randomly vary at wotlike it wanted to go faster but would jump in and out of the highest rpm.so I put on a new coil, condenser, cleaned up carb, new fuel lines, tank, cleaned out fuel pump and set points. After all this it was still running about the same maybe a little better. So I did a decarb and it was built up so bad I decided to pull the head and took a razor knife and gently scraped all the carbon off that I could get to,while in there I noticed one piston was a little pitted and the other has a couple of spots where the spark plug was hit by the piston, resulting in having to use j6c plugs which are a lilttle shorter also there is a place on the head cover itself where the piston has hit it. The motor runs good just acts weird at wot an after I scraped the carbon off I took it to the lake and it seemed about the same until the sound of the motor changed during wot, it randomly would get louder not not even more rpm just a different noise. My q's are why can't I reach wot, is it the pistons, why would one be hitting, is it worth taring apart and replacing pistons? Also I noticed the new coil scrubs the flywheel now. Thanks for any help!!!

Re: Problem after decarb

Hi Lupus71. For starters, the coils should definitely NOT be rubbing against the flywheel. You'll need to remove it and realign the coils properly. You'll then want to confirm spark on each cylinder. You should get a strong, blue spark capable of jumping a 1/4" gap from each plug wire. Be sure that the points and condensers are in good shape a set to .020" at the high spot on the crankshaft cam. Let's get the spark straightened out, then we'll move on toe fuel and compression. This link can walk you through and entire ignition rebuild. You can get any parts for the job right here at iboats.

If the piston is hitting the plug it sounds like you have some internal probs. Wrist pin or conn rod bearing. Also do a compression test on it.

Re: Problem after decarb

Did comp test getting about 60 on both if I did it right , took out both plugs and pulled a few times. I took it out on the river and it was firing on both cylinders but sounded like it was trying to go faster then would slow up again. I tried cleaning the points and priming it while at wot and it didnt help. I'm getting a blue spark also but that just holding it at what I'm guessing is a 1/4 inch away from the motor.

Re: Problem after decarb

Just noticed the flywheel is hitting the new coil again. I keep taking the flywheel off and cleaning it up then put it back on and it won't hit the coil even after tightening it down and turning it over but if I took it out all day and now it's hitting again. Any help would be great!

Re: Problem after decarb

I don't have any experience with the 9.5's, but if it's the same as the 18HP, then there will be machined bosses under the spot where the coils are mounted. The metal part of the coil (the part that is rubbing on the flywheel) should be flush with them.

If you've run it enough, you might have destroyed the laminations and rendered the coil to a paperweight.

You are torquing the flywheel nut when you put it back on, aren't you? The 22 cu in motors (18,20 and 25) should be torqued to 40 ft/lb. Don't know what it is on the 9.5.

Re: Problem after decarb

I'm using my inch pound wrench it only goes to about 20 ft lbs but I think I have it tight enough but not too tight. The new coil that's getting hit has some burn marks and is scraped up pretty bad so I put the old one back on after cutting off the old wire end to some fresh and adjusted the points again and the bottom cyl is firing but the top isn't with either coil( old one was just weak so I replaced, although I did get a few weaker sparks when I moved the gap closer on my tester then it quit. Also is the flywheel ruined? It has some scratches in it but the bottom cyl is firing. I don't understand why it would not be hitting when I turn it by hand but if I go run it and check it by hand it will be scrubbing again. No scrubs on the old coil.

Re: Problem after decarb

Hi lupus71. The flywheel should never hit the coils. If it is hitting them, then they are not properly installed. The old one may work, bcause it was unintentionally worn down over times. Either way, take the time to look closely at the ignition. The coils are probably just pinching a wire which is preventing them from seating properly. Use this link to walk your through the inspection.

Re: Problem after decarb

is the stator plate wobbly? is there any horizontal freeplay in the flywheel/crankshaft?
