Problem during shifting in gears?

Hi all,

My 70hp johnson, blown after overheat, we had to remove the powerhead, and detached from the drive shaft by disconnecting from the linkage. After rebuilding the powerhead and reassembling the block, its working fine under idle, but when put in gear it would not work forward or reverse, the engine hasitating then shut down. Anyone has any idea what wrong? All suggestion is welcome. Thanks.

What engine are we working on, model number? After it shut down will the engine restart, can you turn the flywheel? Any metal particles in the lower unit oil?

Yes, I have 2001 70 hp johnson, after shifting it hesitate then shut down, but it start after first crank.
