1991 Rinker 236 Sport Cuddy, 454 mag, bravo one, 3 blade 21 deg prop, and no trim tabs. Boat is aft heavy when more then two people are in the boat and doesn't want to get on plane. I am 95% sure I am going to put trim tabs on the boat but is that going to solve my problem? There is not a lot of room on the back of the boat so does anyone have ideas on the best way to position the trim cylinders? One more question, would you install them yourself or have someone do it for you?

Thanks for looking.

I'm thinking that 330 plus HP should kick that thing right up. Make sure you have the proper trim attitude when you start. Checking the pitch on your prop would not be a bad idea.
Depending on the tabs you buy the installation is pretty straightforward. Do check with the manufacturer and see if their warranty will be honored if you decide to do it yourself. :D

Re: Problem getting on plane.

A 24' boat with a 454 should have no problem getting on plane with even 10 or 12 people on board. Trim tabs aren't going to solve that problem. When's the last time the motor had a tune-up and compression check?

I was driving a Sea Ray 260 Sundancer (heavy boat with generator, air conditioner, galley, bathroom, etc) this weekend with a 350 and 8 people on board and it has no problems planing. Wasn't a speed demon by any means, but your boat is much lighter and has more power. Something's wrong there.

Can you explain "doesn't want to get on plane"?

Do you mean get's on plane slow?
-or-
Almost won't plane?
-or-
Won't plane at all?

How long does it take to get on plane with just yourself?
How about when you have two people?
How about when you have 3+ people?

Re: Problem getting on plane.

i agree with what other people are saying, I have a 1974 25ft carver with a 350, the boat is like 12,000 punds, and with 10 people on board i dont have a problem getting it to plane out. I would have a compression test done, and a tune up done. It sounds to me like the motor is not putting out near the power it should be.

Also i would check the pitch on the prop.

I'd look at the prop - my guess would be that it is set up for top speed & has a very high pitch prop - 23 or higher. Dropping the pitch would be a large improvement. With all that power it should plane easily. Trim tabs won't hurt but you should check out the prop first.

I'm guessing that he meant a 21" pitch prop.

My buddies Checkmate 242 does the same thing with 2-3 people in the back with the extra cooler. Only difference is he runs a 23 Mirage plus. Boat has a 454 Mag and bravo drive.
I would think with the 21p you shoudn't have any problem unless you have a bunch of weight in the wrong places. Tabs would help but I would look into a tune up and making sure everything is in tip top running condition. A small problem can kill hole shot or cost a couple of hundred rpm up top.

Re: Problem getting on plane.

I am going to take the boat out this weekend and I have a couple different props to try. I will let everyone know how it went.

I am still going to put trim tabs on it for the big lakes, just to help cut through the waves if it gets rough out there.

Thanks

Boat will get on plane but it takes a while with a full load. It just seems like the boat isn't balanced and the rear end sinks and doesn't want to climb out of the water when I hit the gas.

Well I added trim tabs and went with a 4 blade 22 pitch prop and she gets on plane with out any proplem now, even with a full load.
