After removing the engine I wanted to reinstall the Alpha outdrive for storage but it seems to be more difficult than installing with the engine. I can't even get the bolts past the holes to get a nut on them. I took off the big rubber ring since it was getting pinched but it's no better. The shifter shoe is just about to contact the shift rod so I'm wondering if it moved a bit. All I did was remove the outdrive and lay it down while the engine was lifted out then picked it up again to install it back on the boat.
Does the prop lock into gear when it's fully installed because right now I can spin the prop and I hear a clicking and the driveshaft doesn't spin.

when looking at the Shifter peice on the outdrive side, turn it straight with the drive ( clockwise ) gently till it stops, then hold the prop in the couter-clockwise rotation this will hold it in FORWARD, you should also make sure the shifter foot is straight ( forward gear position )

You should then be able to put the drive on, You'll need to put your hand inside a bit and guide the drive shaft into the gimbal bearing.

from that point, should go on easily, but you'll need to continue holding the prop in the counter-rotation direction to keep the drive shifter peice in the forward gear position.

make sense ? good luck

Since the shift cable is no longer connected, you need to make sure the reciever on the gimbal ring is properly positioned so that the intermediate shift shaft on the drive can index properly with it.....
With the lower cable no longer connected to the controls at the helm, it can be in any position, you need to make sure it is pointing forward.....;)

Ayuh,... You have to hold tension on the propshaft to keep it in forward,
Otherwise, it slips into neutral....

Thanks everyone. I turned the prop CCW and put the big O-ring inside the transom assembly instead of on the upper gear case and it slipped on like......well, you know.

I was in the boat measuring and I happened to grab the driveshaft sticking through the transom. It can be wiggled around a bit. I though it would rock solid in the gimbal bearing. Tell me it's normal. If not, I've got another item on my "to-do" list before the new engine goes in.

normal if you didn't replace the o-rings on the driveshaft and grease em

The gimbal bearing is aptly named, it is sphere-shaped(the part in the aluminum carrier) and designed to pivot. You are probably fine.
