I may just be stupid, but this is really not going well...<br />When threading the transom shift cable into the pivot housing how do I keep from twisting the cable??<br /><br />To remove it I had to remove the pivot hsg bolts and actually rotate the entire housing off the cable because trying to unthread it twisted the cable hsg.<br /><br />--Scratching my head--

Re: Problem installing transom shift cable

Are you talking about a Mercruiser Alpha shift cable? I always pull the cable out of the transom assembly and then unscrew it from the "helmet." You can turn the cable as it unscrews that way. Same thing when reinstalling. Just be careful not to kink it when subsequently pushing the cable in through the transom assembly.

leave the engine end dissconnected and thread away, it just goes round and round that way.

Re: Problem installing transom shift cable

I'm getting ready to replace my Mercruise Alpha1 Gen II cable and a guy at the boat shop advised that I disconnect at bell housing, tie or tape a strong string on that end and then pull it through from the engine side. That way the string will act a guide to show how it twists around the exhaust manifold etc.on installation of the new one. I've never done this before so any advice on tricks and things to avoid is appreciated. It killed me to buy the $38 tool to reomve it from the bell housing but it seemed I had no choice.
