I have new 2008 Mercury FourStroke (3 cyclinder). It was running fine up until today. After going out, I tried to start it again, but it stalled every time I tried to put it in forward. After a few more attempts, it stalls now after staying in neutral for about 5 seconds.

What could be the problem?

Hi,

I've got the same motor as you... Is the vent on your fuel cap opened? You might also check the fuel filter/screen. In your owner's manual it tells you how to remove and clean it.

That's my thoughts. Good luck.

Try pumping the primer bulb and see if that will keep it running. Check your tank vent to be sure its open. Are you sure the fuel is good and fresh? Let us know. It should still be under warranty but these are a few thing you can check.

how does it run when it does run? Is it rough/struggling? Is it flooded (do you prime it beforehand and if so, how much... do you smell gas?)?

Few more details por favor.

I assume it is the same motor I have... 4 stroke EFI... if so, there's a primer bulb on the fuel line, but no priming enrichment mechanism on the motor... the EFI system does the enriching automatically.

Thank you.

To answer ALL of your questions:

- The fuel cap is open.
- The fuel filter screen was checked.
- Pumping the primer bulb didn't work.
- The fuel is fresh and clean.
- For the few seconds it does run, it doesn't struggle.

Thank you again; hope this helped.

then I'd be bringing it to local merc dealer.... You've got a warranty.... might as well make use of it.

Could be problem with the fuel pump or EFI system (?)
