Problem removing coil wire from distributor

I have a 71 Johnson 4 cyl 100 hp that I am trying to remove the coil wire from the distributor under the flywheel and it will not pull out without me breaking it (or so it seems) Are those only removeable by taking off the flywheel? It seems to be screwed in from the inside of the distributor??

Those wires have normal right hand brass threaded ends soldered on. They unscrew from the distributor cap.
