can anyone help ? i recently purchased a used 1990 175 johnson. looks real clean and compression was an even 90 for all six cylinders. i got it started briefly on the stand. while i was in process of making adjustments i couldn't get the motor to spin fast enough to restart.i though it was the starter but i replaced it with anohter and had the same problem. with two or more plugs out it spins fine with all the plugs in it has a very hard time turning the fly wheel. dead battery bad cables not the problem. any suggestions ...thanks

Remove, clean , and tighten the two large cables on both sides of the starter solenoid as well as the engine ground lugs and see if that helps.

When troubleshooting a slow turning engine always make sure you have a good battery as the very first check. Almost new batteries can develop a bad cell. Connecting a charger may show its charged and a voltage check may show 12.6 volts. Its the ability to deliver current that counts. One bad cell kills that ability. Swap a "known good" battery or at least check the existing battery with a hydrometer. If the battery is indeed good, then move to connections, cables, solenoid, then lastly, the starter. Try jumping the starter directly from the battery to eliminate the solenoid.

you can also check your battery by hooking up a volt meter to the battery and perform a load test. The volts shold drop to about 10.5 and bounce back up. If not, battery may have a dead cell.
