Problem turning engine counter clockwise

Hello everyone. Recently was gifted a chapparell project boat.. stop laughing..:). Powered with Inboard 5.7 sbc. I am an electrician by trade, have alway been a wrench and screwdriver kinda guy and Figure I’d give it a shot. Got her home about 2 weeks ago and after installing a new battery, removing some of the spaghetti mess and re-wiring what I think to be the necessities to run the engine I disconnected the water/fuel sep. got a fresh can of gas and gave it a whirl.. no start.. then I poured a little fuel down quadrajet and she started up!.. good news.. bad news mechanical FP broken, removed carburetor and that thing needed to be rebuilt 5yrs ago, then noticed an edelbrock auto manifold that was leaking oil was installed... so here is what I did. Removed distributor, T-Stat housing and manifold. After a few calls to local boating supply shops and speaking to a few helpful gentleman I came to this conclusion since a new manifold was going to cost about five or $600 and a freshwater cooling system would probably only cost a few hundred dollars more if I installed it myself I decided I would keep the manifold. I even checked local auto junkyards to see if I could find an older cast iron intake manifold but had no luck..so then I had distributor out, the old manifold off and the broken MFP out. Got a new FP and During installation I bumped the engine so rod was up higher and install was easy. Then installed manifold with new seals and new T-stat with seals.. then After some research on rebuilding the quadrajet and adjusting them I got scared especially since I’m in Ma. And at this point I am still hoping and trying to get boat going for this season. I had an old 2bbl mercarb from a 305 I had years ago that was working when removed so I ordered a carb adapter kit and some gaskets, cleaned it and threw her in..then when I went to reinstall the distributor I realized I did something not so smart.. I lost the timing bumping the engine to install FP.. So now I’m trying to find TDC and so far I have this. Distributor out, #1 plug out and a mark on balancer for top of piston on what I hope to be compression cycle? Then I went to spin the crank counter clockwise and the bolt just loosened?? Wtf! So now I am not sure if someone knows how I can turn this another way... sooo close but stuck. Sorry about the novel but I figured there might b info that may pertain. Thx!!

You don't want to use the 305 carb on a 350 unless you change the jets. The 305 carb will cause the motor to run lean and it will destroy the motor in a short amount of time.

Don't ever rotate the motor with the crank bolt, damage can be done.

You only need to be close for the distributor install, and once fired up it can be adjusted. Just crank the motor over until it hits and then adjust it some more to get it running sort of smooth. Once there you use a timing light.

If while starting if the distributor is 180 degrees out as can be found from lots of backfiring. Remove the distributor while watching the rotor. Pick it up, turn 180 degrees and reinstall, your now good to try again.

We have some fellow iboats here that live in MA

You don't want to rotate it backwards. Pull the #1 plug, place your finger over the hole. Bump engine over until the piston is pushing out air, continue to rotate until the balancer mark is at TDC, and place the rotor pointing toward the #1 spot. As AllDodge stated that'll get you plenty close enough to get it running.

I'm similar to you in that I'm an electrician by trade. But I started wrenching long before biting wires became my specialty. Turning wrenches IMO is much easier but you can really screw some things up if you don't know what you're doing.

Thx everyone for the help.. sooo yeah I’m embarrassed to admit this but I must have put the distributor in 6 times before I realized I wasn’t getting any spark from coil.. eehawww.. extra eehawww since I’m a sparky. luckily I have thick skin and if you can’t laugh at yourself you shouldn’t laugh at others and that’s no fun at all!:) is that true about the 2bbl carb causing harm to engine? It came off a 305 but it may not have to supposed to been there either.. wanted to try to get out and fish for Father’s Day but this thing is kicking my arse.. I am going’s to try to install new coil tomorrow and see if I can get her started. Thx again!

OMG... I watched 20 instructional videos of how to find TDC and every single one turned with crank bolt.. figures.. oh and just an FYI.. an old school hi-Fi (big) headphone jack with the hard rubber fits so snug in plug hole that it Scared the **** out of me and Was so loud I thought It went through the boat!! Yup that trick is a one and done.. At least I know compression good...lol
