Re: problem with 1973 20 hp johnson
No i dont think there are any weeds im running it in a open lake i was told it cold be the carb? but not really sure it feels like the gears are slipping but my lower unit lub it good with no water
Don't listen to the guy that told you it is the carburetor.
I was trying to save myself some typing, but you might as well go ahead and check the prop hub. Here's how: Make a mark on the plastic prop nut and another on the propeller, aligned with the first one. Run the motor till the suspected slippage occurs, then stop the motor and check your marks. If they are no longer aligned, the hub slipped. But if they are still aligned, repeat the test, because there is a slim chance it stopped slipping in the same position.
The prop hub is the only thing that can slip, assuming it is a "slippage" and not making a lot of grinding noises, etc. Otherwise, it has to be cavitation. Grinding, jumping, and other assorted nasty sounds would be serious internal damage in the lower unit. You don't want that.
