Problem with Carb on 25hp Johnson

I recently purchased a 1983 Johnson 25Hp outboard. The fellow i bought it from said it hadn't been ran in about a year to year and half. The first time i tried to run the motor it started on the second pull and idled nicely. I trolled around with it at low speed for around 20 minutes before i took the motor for a run. It seemed to run very well until i went to back it off to a trolling speed again. When I did this, it died out on me and would only start when I had the choke pulled almost the whole way out. I have tried the motor a few times to start it while the boat is still on the trailer and motor is in the water. It will only start when I have the choke pulled most of the way out and i can not push the choke back in at all even after the motor is running. I can't turn the throttle back to less then half way or the motor just dies. Do I have a dirty carb that i can just fix with some carb cleaner? Anyone have any suggestions on what it might be wrong? Thanks for your help

Check to make sure the gas tank is venting properly. If it is, the carb needs to be removed, cleaned, and re kitted. The idle speed jet may be gummed up.

Since this is a new motor to you, you should replace the water pump if you don't know how old the pump is. This will save you many a headache that a overheat could produce in the future. Welcome to IBoats !

Yea, I agree with, Cofe. I think your idle circuit is blocked. When you adust the SS needle, does it make a difference?
I have the same motor and recommend you go old school, and soak the carb and new kit.

Thanks Cofe and Jasper. I will try soaking the carb to clean it and put a new kit in it. Hopefully this helps it out to be able to idle again properly.
