Thought I'd start a new thread on my problem. I apologize if I've missed some how-to's on this forum...I have researched but couldn't really find my specific problem...how old the engine is...but I could have missed

I'm not sure what the problem is here but here is my dilemma...

My stepfather gave me a boat with this engine on it
(things run fine so far..still have to take it out on the water after replacing the lower unit) and said that it never charged the battery when he had it. I've learned that there is a rectifier and stator as a charging system.

This is what I've tested so far:
(battery is new and in great condition)
1) Engine off - volt test shows around 12 volts
2) Engine running - volt test shows around 12 volts (no change in voltage)
3) Rev engine - volt test shows around 12 volts (no change in voltage)
4) I have verified a continuity test from the positive cable that goes to the rectifier, to my battery.
5) Tried to test from my manual and got opposite results from what should have been.
6) Only conclusion (I could come up with) was that the rectifier may be bad so ordered and replaced with new one. Repeated steps 1-5 with same results.

I'm not sure if I blew the new rectifier and now don't even know if the old one is good or not...

** How would I test the continuity of the green wires to the rectifer (apparently these go to the stator?? but I'm not sure where they start... the starter? not even sure if i should do this...

What should my next step be?

Thanks in advance!
