My neighbor friend just got this outboard and it has an interesting problem. It has water below the starter inside the case! His guess is that it's an upper shaft seal problem, but he doesn't currently have a shop manual to know for sure. But, the search is on for that.

He doesn't want to start taking things apart further (he has the LU off already).

Any guidance on how to get it apart so that he can find the failure and make repairs?

As far as I know you start with removing the lower unit.----Then work your way up to remove the powerhead.----Lots of work.

Yeah, he has the lower unit off already. He's fairly sure that the next step is to remove the oil reservoir (4-stroke) and associated stuff. Could be tricky. He's a very experienced mechanic, which is why he doesn't want to go in there ham-fisted and mess something up.

He also has a number of other projects going on right now and his other boat is fully operational, so he can wait a little while for answers.
