I have a new mercury 9.9hp outboard. I broke in the engine for a little over an hour just like the manual stated, using a 25:1 gas/oil ratio for the first tank and it ran fine. The second time I brought it out, still using the same tank of gas I began having problems. I started it up to leave a fishing hole and began cruising for the boat ramp; about half way across the lake it bogged down and died. I started it and went to take off and it bogged down again. I could start it and it would idle fine, and would run fine at a low rate of speed but if I tried to give it gas and plane the boat out, it would bog down and die. As I said, this is a new motor.......what the heck is wrong, do you think I somehow fouled out the plugs, and if so how did I do it.

Being "New", it should definately go back to the dealer for warranty repairs. Perhaps the carb needs adjusting. Or it has an airleak in the fuel line. Or a bad ignition.

do you think that I should try to replace the spark plugs first, or say to heck with all of it and bring it in?

Pull the plugs, clean and regap. That break-in mix can goop 'em up. If that makes no difference, start thinking about hauling it back to the dealer.

I here lots of people say its the carb well wrong its fuel starvation. Shes not getting the gas when you put the lead down. Reminds me of my 15 year old snowblower everyone said its the carb well I changed that and found it was the cdi easy fix and she runs like new.

Now you will want to check the spark plugs and clean em first. But dont rule out lack of fuel

Is the cooling water flow happening? If the engine is overheating it could show the symptoms you are having. Be sure that the system isn't clogged. Good luck.

New motor or not.....it smells like a slug of water in the gas tank....take a look in the bottom of that tank, you might find your prob....

Re: problem with new mercury 9.9

The fuel tank vent was wide open, and plenty of coolent water was being expelled. Even though I still have a quarter of a tank of "break in fuel" (25:1), I am going to dump it out and let the tank dry for a day and replace it with new fuel and mix it at the normal 50:1 ratio. I am also going to replace the plugs and clean the fuel filter if necessary. After I run it this weekend, I'll let you know what happened.
