Problem with reverse gear and others....

I have a 65 horse form 1968 and when you want to go in reverse you click it past neutral and it dosent do anything untill you got about 3-4 inches past and then you hear grinding then it suddenly goes full power reverse. I think that the shift cable is messed up and we just have to adjust it. Can someone tell me what the problen is and how to fix it??? also how do you clean the carb the best way without taking it and everything around it apart?

Well I am not a boat grue but if the motor speed is to high it will grind or it could be linkage needs adjustment.. Its best to get a manual it will tell you how to clean the carb. You can also get so Sea Foam and add it to your fuel its great for cleaning removing carbon and water. I use it in my motorcycle also. you can get Sea Foam at the auto or boat stores. Gary T.
