hi,
i Have a 1972,120hp Chrysler outboard and my water pump is only spitting out water, its not flowing, then my engine overheats about 15 mins after running. Does anyone have suggestions, it would be most appreciated.
thxs
If you don't have a manual, get one soon. I like the Seloc manual for Chrysler. It sure sounds like you're going to have to remove your LU and check your water pump and impeller for starters. The forum experts here will have other good advice.
Changing the impeller is not a hard job IF the LU comes off easily. One thing I did was take a picture of the linkage adjusting nut before I disconnected it. Digicams are nice for these occasions. You could also possibly have a stuck thermostat but, I'd go with the impeller first.
ok, i've got to the impeller, but how do i check if its shot, or not working, is there anyway of knowing this? and i will check my thermostat as well thanks for that advise.
If your impeller is no good, you will know it by looking at it. The vanes will be broken off or worn. Even if it doesn't look bad, replace it while you have the LU off. It is going to be $20 maximum for a new impeller. I would also change the thermostat while you're at it. Also, while you have the lu off, hook your garden hose up to the copper water line going into the powerhead and flush the system out. Make sure water is coming out of the exhaust.
