Just recently changed out the shift and throttle cables on my 1963 100hp Merc. Followed the manual as good as I could.

When I move the shifter from neutral to forward / forward to neutral, I must go past the true neutral position (reverse) to set back in neutral.

I have no problem going from reverse to neutral / neutral to reverse.

Could there be another problem that I'm over looking???

Some older engines require a over shift but it sounds like you need to lengthen the distance between the cable mounts a couple of turns.

Re: Problems adjusting shift cable on old Merc.

Opened up a can of new worms last weekend! Took my boat out for a test run last weekend. It would not go into reverse at all, just forward gear.

When I engaged the shift lever into forward it seemed to go full boar. When I moved the shifter back to neutral it locked up the shifter. Now the shifter will not go into forward gear at all.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm 1 step away from leaving it at the dock.

FYI - I recently dropped the lower unit, Is there a good chance that I installed the lower unit improperly???
