Re: problems after changing impeller

Physically speaking, changing the impeller has nothing to do with your shift mechanism in the lower unit. The manual tells you to put the LU in F prior to reassy so that you can use the prop to turn the driveshaft while inserting to get the splines to line up with the splines of the crankshaft......that last little inch.

What you also have to do is to put your remote control in F too so that when the procedure is completed it will function properly. If you had the remote in the wrong gear it can easily explain the problem. Try it again.

Re: problems after changing impeller

With those gearboxes when the cam is in forward the shift shaft can continue to turn easily, and the line up may be wrong... Done it plenty of times myself.

The trick I use is to leave the controls in neutral, make sure the box is also in neutral, have the engine cover off and the plugs out and then, as I'm installing the box, turn the flywheel a bit to line up the crankshaft splines. It's a bit more work, but at least I know the shift linkages are correct... and save the work of having to remove the box again. :D

Re: problems after changing impeller

personally i disagree with Mark, i always disconnect my cable at the motor, then drop the lower unit, after motor is completely back together, i reconnect the cables with the motor and control, in neutral and idle position. turning the shift rod, or moving the shift lever on the motor, can throw shift out of sequence

i am not going to get into a long discussion, back and forth on this. this is my opinion.

Have 30 years doing this and nothing easy as this: turn your shift shaft at the lower unit clockwise until you turn the prop and the drive shaft start moving, thru the shifting box in the boat in forward gear and full throatle, slide the lower unit against the motor and turn the prop until ingages the crankshaft, bolt it up and you are done without mistakes.
Hope this help.

You're not disagreeing with me. I am quoting the OEM Service Manual Merc P/N 90-830234R3. I just happen to agree with the folks that built the engine......their process works for me.
