Problems Putting Boat in Gear

Hi all,

My dad and I took my boat (1987 Thundercraft 170) out to the lake this morning and ran into a "putting it in gear" problem. I just bought this boat a few weeks ago. For example, in order for us to put it in reverse we had to turn the wheel until the gears locked in place, but it sounded like the gears were grinding when we did this. It took numerous attempts at getting it in reverse. We had the same issue when going from reverse to forward. What could the problem be and what costs am I looking at to get it fixed?

Also, when we put the boat in neutral, the impropellor kept on spinning so therefore the boat was slowly moving....it wasn't at a dead standstill. We could never get the boat was at a dead standstill. We had the throttle straight up and down. Maybe we were putting it in neutral wrong??? Or maybe it's the same issue as above? Needless to say, with the boat slowly moving, I had to jump out of the boat onto the dock so that I could get the car to back it down the ramp. Were we doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. I greatly appreciate it!

Re: Problems Putting Boat in Gear

I will try to give as much info as possible:

1987 Thundercraft
I/O Mercrusier 4.3...I believe it was the orginal engine but I do know that the previous owner got the "upper half rebuilt".
17ft bowrider
It has been garage kept.

I hope this helps answer my question.

Please excuse me and I apologize because I'm a newbie and this is my first boat.
