Problems starting the engine UPDATE!

I am having problems starting my 62 merc500. I have a spark on all of the plugs and cleaned the carbs also, but still it won't start, sometimes it seems it want to run but then again nothing. I dont know where to look now.

Has anybody got a suggestion?

Is it the spark plugs, do i have the wrong ones. What is the right type of the plugs?

Have you checked the compression? If you have the wrong plugs or gap that could be the issue as well. Not sure on the right plugs but the parts place should be able to help you or check the NGK catalog yourself.

Fixed it! It was a litle leak in the fuel line that made it that there wasn't coming enough fuel to the engine, it swallowt air in the line.

The next problem i have now is that it only stays running with the fast idle lever up high, is this a question of fine tunning.

Do i do this with the fuel/air mixture screws on the carbs? And what is normal to screw them out?

Are there more ways to fine tune this engine? This is al new for me.

I hope someone will be so kind to help me.
