I have twin 470's and just installed two new batteries and started the stbd engine and was warming it up on muffs and everything was working fine for ten or fifteen minutes when the rectifier started smoking and could see a glowing spot down in the damper that was the rectifier. A little antifreeze had leaked down on the regulator when I was testing the temperture which I guess could of shorted out the regulator, I dried it all off and waited until today to restart the engine and it started to glow and smoke again, is this the regulator causing this or did I just fry the rectifier and regulator? I suppose it would be a good time to convert over any suggestions on the best and least expensive set up.

where sre you located and what is your level of experiance with tools?
Regulator/Rctifier is a sealed unit nothing to short there with A/F or water. Stator could be glowing from a failed rectifier/regulator. Once smoked it needs replacing

Least expensive is an alternator conversion
