I am new to the boating world and admit I do not know alot about outboards (lol the reason I am here)

I took my 16' skiff out yester day and it was running fine for about two hours but then it started acting funny. when I would have it at a slow or idle speed everything seemed fine but as soon as i sped up the motor seemed to run fine but the boat would not go any faster it actually seemed to slow down. i checked the prop and it seems fine but I have no idea what is going on. like in a car when the clutch slips is the only thing I can relate it to. even though I know these motors dont have a clutch that is just what it was acting like. thanks for any advice or help

Spun hub.

The prop has a splined core in it, coupled to the outside shell with a rubber shock absorber/clutch. It has reached the end of it's useful life.

Prop shop can change it while you wait. If the prop is somewhat hammered anyway, just replace it or send it to the prop shop for rebuild.

hope it helps

Have to old one fixed and buy a new one so next time you wont be out of water when the new one does the same thing.

thats probably what I'll do.

what causes this to happen? is it just a issue that occurs over time or is there a reason this could happen?

Wear and tear, bumping things with your prop, hitting the bottom...It's just a big piece of rubber pressed in.
