Problems with starter on 94 60 HP Merc

Went to the lake yesterday, and the starter motor would not engage the fly wheel..

I took a crescent wrench and tapped in 10 times (old automotive trick)..the starter then engaged the flywheel..

Question is..can the starter be rebuilt? Should I trust it? Should I just replace it?

I restarted the motor 5 times after with no problems..

Any advice would be appreciated..

There are more common things that can cause that problem. Weak battery, bad connections, bad cable. First thing to do would be to clean and lightly lube that part of the shaft the bendix rides up and down on.
