Re: problems with the steering

Is it difficult to turn in one direction only, or is it a pain to turn all the time whether idling or running fast?

If it turns easy in one direction and hard in the other then you need to adjust the trim tab on the lower unit. If it's hard to steer all the time then it's probably the steering cable, but also possibly an issue with the steering assembly on the engine.

Re: problems with the steering

First you need to isolate the problem. Disconnect the steering link from the motor. Now turn the steering wheel back and forth. Easy? Hard? Now swing the motor back and forth. Easy? Hard?

By now you should know which to fix, the steering system or the motor.

A very common problem is where the steering cable goes through the motor's tilt tube. It will fail test #1 if that is what is happening. You need to fix it now, before it gets worse. It will get to the point that you can't get them apart if you continue to neglect it. The cable must be removed from the tilt tube, and the rust cleaned out of the tube. Relube it as you put it back together, and from now on put it on your normal maintenance list to keep it lubricated.

Re: problems with the steering

If it is the cable you may be able to repair it, check out my video on you tube, " boat steering cable repair", by artseventy6, this worked out really well for me, good luck.
