Procedure: Simple Starter Test

The battery must have a 90 Amp rating fully charged.
Lubricate pinion gear and screw shaft of starter with light oil.
Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the positive terminal of the starter. Connect the ground lead to a good ground on the powerhead.
Check the battery voltage under load by attempting to crank the engine over with the ignition switch and observe the voltmeter reading.
If the reading 9.5 volts or greater, and the starter fails to operate, repair or replace the starter as needed.

This information applies specifically to 3 & 4 cylinder Mercs 1965-1990.
