I had a bearing to go bad in lower unit and the mechanic replaced and flushed system and new gear oil. I even provided the Volvo gear oil. One problem he forgot to add gear oil and remove the flushing fluid. After he said I was ready to go repair is done I ran boat for 1 hour and then overheat due to seals giving way and sucking air on plane. I got home and check out drive gear oil and the picture says it all. Out drive smell like burnt oil and roars. He says may have not hurt gears and bearings he will replace the seals and add gear oil and good to go . I think he is just hoping to not be out about 5500 . I am no fool. I say he owes me an remanufactured outdrive. I am very upset. I think the outdrive is total loss . Any suggestions or thoughts.

Yea, that is a shame. Hopefully, he will make good on it. Hard to say if his remedy will work.

One of the many reasons why I (and others here on iBoats) do their own work.

If you rode an hour without gear lube only on "flushing fluid" (which is a solvent and cleaner with no lubrication properties) I pretty much will guarantee the gears and bearings are toast

This is why I work on my own stuff, people just dont care theeses days, they get distracted easy. most just go through the motions from 9-5. to collect their measly paycheck. then head to the bar and blow it. while the stuff they work on and manufacture takes craps all overtown...

Agree. The only reason I hire the mechanic who has a boat shop was because I was working 70 hours a week and had no time to do the complete repair to lower unit myself and I had took off for vacation next week for a lake trip.

Moral of the story always check out drive lube even after a certified professional boat mechanic
Does work on your outdrive even if he says you are ready to launch.

Does anyone know where

Does any know a reputable company to purchased a remanufactured outdrive from. The mechanic wants to try to fix it himself and use his sources for rebuilt not remanufacture out drives . I kindly told him I will only accept payment from him for a remanufacture outdrive and I will install it myself.

Does the fluid have a metallic sheen to it?

I can't really see a sheen but a small amount black material the size of pepper is in it. About 15 to 16 pieces. It has separated in a bottle with some type of light color substance has settle on the bottle of the bottle. When you shake it becomes suspended.
