Progressive Insurance is Bad News!

I recently worked on a couple of boats where the customers damaged their drives. Both boats were insured by Progressive Insurance. One boat hit a log, the other found some rocks. The one that hit the log showed little external damage, the one that hit the rocks suffered obvious external damage. The one that hit the log bent the propshaft and sheared three teeth off the forward gear. The one that hit the rocks bent the propshaft badly enough to cause a leak and all of the lube sucked out. Progressive Insurance refuses to honor their commitment and pay for the damage. The one that hit the log, they claim it failed due to normal wear and tear (with sheared gear teeth???) and they're trying to blame us for the failure of the one that hit the rocks (like we were driving the boat???).

Based on my recent experiences with them I'd never give them a dime to insure anything. If asked, I'd say dump that company and find one with adjusters with at least a little common sense. Anyone else out there with bad experiences with Progressive? Or any other company for that matter?

Thanks for the insurance update. I couldn't get a straight answer out of Allstate with regards to enviromental coverage should I leak fuel or oil or heaven forbid sink the boat.

BoatUS was very specific and clear on their boat coverage so that is who I am with now. A little on the pricy side though............

I have progressive because they were one of only two companies who would insure my "old 1972" boat... All I was really looking for was liability...

BoatUS was the other who would insure my "old" boat, and they are waaaaaay on the pricey side (wanted arm, leg, and first born), but I'd bet they do have a better policy...

State Farm insured my old boat w/5000 loss value and 300k liability, and 100% reimbursement on towing/repairs on the water up to $500. The trailer is covered too. If I break down on the road and my car is towed, they also cover the cost of towing the boat/trailer to a safe location.

That coverage costs $104 a year.

State Farm has always paid my auto and home claims with no problems. Hope I don't have to made a boat claim!!!

Thanks, Willy.

That is exactly the right way to report bad experience with a vendor. Tell what happened and what you think about it.

I, too use State Farm to insure my "old" boat at reasonable rates. Like Mark I have been a State Farm customer for many years. That may make a difference in their willingness to cover me, and at a good rate.

Thanks JB. I was hoping I wasn't pushing any wrong buttons. I like it here! Having a ball!!! BTW I had a rider on my homeowner's insurance for my sailboat. Never had to claim on it, but the additional charge was well under $100. But I'd like to mention that it's a possibility for any boat And homeowners out there.

Hi to all,

My son-in-law were out fishing in Port Sulfur, La. All day long running bayous, some rather shallow, he kept looking back at the wake, etc.
Finally on the way back to the dock, another boater we were fishing with decided to show us a short cut back to the launch. Well first cut off of Grand Bayou he cruised right thru. We on the other hand was a little off center and we hit something VERY SOLID engine ran for a few seconds grind away then died. We had to be towed back to the launch (not taking the short cut). I thought it was rods that went as I could turn the flywheel in one direction but not the other. Well it turned out he destroyed the lower unit.

Fortunately he had full coverage, boat was 4 years old. They paid $2300 for a brand new l/u installed by dealer. Ded.

He had Statefarm ins.

For now own we fish that area in my flat.

Beck

Insurance is a strange business.

I've been with State Farm for over 25 years. NOT ONE CLAIM. Yet, since none of my vehicles (company owned) were with them since 1996, they acted like they didn't know me. Although my boats, life, and home insurance with them never lapsed.

It all came to a head whem my son decided to get his own vehicle. We had to start out as a NEW customer. I found that disturbing.

When I questioned the agent why none of my other policies mattered, she shrugged and said, "we know your life, home, boat policies and claim record (NONE), we have no idea what kind of auto risk you are".

I paid a tremendous amount and am NOT happy about it.

She said, "it's ALL lawsuit driven and you live in a state where 43% of the drivers on the road are non insured (illigal aliens). You (ME) get to pay for it." "Plus, you/we live in the highest auto theft state in the union-we're too close to Mexico, that's where the stolen vehicles go".

At least she was honest.

Damn, I'm mad now.
