Hello all! I'm an extreme DIY, and recently purchased an 1987 Four Winn's 245 Vista, for $1200 (tandem axle trailer included) It was winterized, but stored in a driveway for 5 years. There's evidence of standing water half-filling the cabin, and engine compartment. So far I've gutted and deep cleaned her, no obvious signs of structural water damage. now I'm moving onto inspecting the engine. Any tips are gladly welcome 😉 (unless you're saying to scrap her)

Honestly, the only things I'm having trouble understanding are the electronics (50/50 operational) and where to identify structural problems. Feels/sounds solid. Also maybe some tips on what to look for on the block before putting any money into her. Thanks in advance!

Pull spark plugs and remove the drive, then try to rotate the motor by pulling on the belts. If unable to move and plugs are not rusty, need to pull the motor

Was boat in salt or fresh water?

Thanks! Hopefully it rotates smoothly. looks to be in good shape, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right. One step at a time.

Fresh lake Erie water but I'm sure the standing water was from rain/melting snow. They didn't store it well. I trust the man I bought it from, he got really sick and couldn't do anything for years.

Thanks! I'm going to head out there now. I'm pretty sure the alternator is toast, but we'll see. I appreciate you help.

Do you know where/how I can locate and inspect the stringers? It all seems dry and solid, but I'd feel better if I could dig deep into the hull.

Use a 1/4 drill and put some tape on the bit so it won't go much deeper then about 1/2 inch. The transom is at least 3/4 inch and stringers are thicker then that.

Drill into stringers near the stern and also the transom down low. Wood should come out dry and blond color. If all good, fill holes with 3M 5200 or 4200
