New to iboats; seems like a great site!

Project: 15' Styrons tunnel hull, 2001 Merc 40 w/ ss surface piercing prop. Construction is 1/8" welded aluminum plate with longitudinal aluminum stringers and gauge aluminum plate floor riveted to stringers. Pretty bulletproof.

Goals: 1. Add floatation; currently none.
2. Add planing surface to eliminate porpoising.
3. Replace nasty carpet with Durabak coating.

In reading the many great posts here, the drill with bare aluminum for the Durabak seems to be: sand, wash, 50/50 water/vinegar wash, zinc chromate primer, light sanding, vacuum, 2 coats Durabak. Haven't gotten the Durabak yet, so don't have instructions. Does this sound about right?

Any help for an old sailor/ wooden boat builder?

Charlie

Re: Project boat

2manyboats,

Welcome to Iboats!

Sounds like you have a sound plan of action. Wish I could help you out on painting aluminum but I have never had one.

Good luck & keep us all posted on your progress.

Re: Project boat

Kevin,

Thanks for your encouragement. It's not a difficult project, but ought to be interesting. I'll post it on Shareaproject as I go.
