I have a 14 foot flat bottom boat with a 99 model 25 horse Merc and has a 16 pitch 3 blade aluminum prop. With the load that I normally carry it has trouble planing out. Once planed out it runs along fine w/good rpms. Can anyone tell me how far down I should go in pitch to get better planing perfomance without going too high in rpm's? I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to props, I just that going down in pitch is like going with a lower gear ratio in the rearend of a car. Thanks in advance.

Re: Prop Advice

efhenry <br />I'm guessing that you don't have a Tach. on the boat to find out your WOT RPM's(Which you need), but I would start with a 10-3/8" X 13" prop for starters. It looks like the 16" pitch is too much, looking at the prop calculator chart. In the meantime, try to get a Tach hooked up or if you already have one, need to know your Wide Open Throttle RPM's.
