I have a 96 Crestliner with a 96 Evinrude 130hp. Current prop is an aluminum 14.25x21. Max rpm achieved with just the wife, fishing gear and myself is 5100rpm's and the same with a couple of extra people. With the 21" prop the boat launches out of the water faster than any boat I have ever been on. There is no bow rise and it seems to instantly go to plane. I purchased the boat last spring and this is the way it was setup. I've checked on turning point prop's web site and they suggest a 15" for water sports and a 17" for speed. 4" pitch decrease should increase rpm's by around 800. My question is what is the suggested max rpm for my motor. Turning Point web site states 5000-6000 yet I have been told 4500 to 5500 by people. Obviously I don't want to put a 17" on it if the max is 5500. Thank you in advance for your advice and time spent. This site as well as the people rock!!

Re: Prop Advice

Don't you have the owners manual or maintenance manual for your engine? If not just type the engine name Evinrude into Google and search. You will find it if you pursue it. Your Engine is not that old. Specs are available.

Re: Prop Advice

rndn, even though the engine is not "that old"..it is 12 yr old technology.
A 21 on that rig is a lot of prop, and regardless of 4500-5500, or 5000-6000, we've found it best for the engine, fuel economy and performance-over-all, to shoot for at least 5800 with a normal load, and 6000 with a normal load will not hurt anything. 5800 would give you possibly the better top-end and still keep you in a very strong hole-shot mode...better than you have now, and beings the engine will only pull the 21P at 5100, I don't think you will lose any significant speed.
I use this as an example at times....I have a friend with an 1800 fisherman Lund with a 115 looper. I tested some new MWC designs on this boat specifically for MWC...very in-depth data. We ran 3 different aluminum props from MWC in 17P and to prove a point to the owner of the boat, I bolted on a Turbo1 in a 15P....the T1 was (as one would expect) faster out of the hole, better mid-range and a surprising higher top-end speed at the same RPM as the fastest of the 3 17P aluminums....about 2.5mph faster.
We "could" go back and raise the engine to the third hole and maybe run a 17P T1 and really make it fly, but he liked the trolling speed and yet was able to increase speed when headed across the lake at the same rpm so he just flat-out bought the T1.
The test props were not for sale, but after the test-run of the T1, he didn't care about the aluminum anymore.
3/4" less diameter, yet 2" less pitch than the fastest 17P alum.....my point??? don't let anyone tell you the diameter "Must" change with the pitch to work properly. Blade design is more important than size or pitch.
Sorry for the long hoop-la, but if you want the most from your rig, let's talk about the brand and style of 21P you have now, and I'll bet we can point you in a direction to get you maybe a bit more than you thought you could get.:)

Re: Prop Advice

Thanks a million Walleyehed!! The current prop is a Michigan Wheel aluminum. About my only complaint I have with the boat is it can be a wet ride in rough water. It seems I can't get the bow up enough without the prop losing bite with the water. Granted the boats anchor, 40 gallon fuel tank and the driver sits well forward of the center of the boat. A picture is in my signature. The current top end is 42mph, not gps but a paddle wheel off my fish finder.
As far as main purpose of the boat I primarily use the boat for fishing, cruising, and just anchoring to catch some sun and swim. Occasionaly I may troll but I always use the electric trolling motor for that and I may have one of my kids or grandkids kneeboard or water ski a few times per year. The Finger lakes I visit are 8-25 miles long and Lake Erie is huge, so extra speed will help as it would not be uncommon to run 10-15 miles to get to where I want to fish. I would like to go with a nice stainless steel prop as I had one on my Baja I used to have and really liked the performance, plus I hate to admit it but I'm one of those guys that likes the bling of the SS hanging off the motor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way my manual states optimum rpms range at 5000-6000, so I guess I'll be going with a 17P.

Walleyehed, what is a T1?

Re: Prop Advice

I've done some additional reading and it looks like I should try to find a prop with aft rake to help lift the bow up. If this is correct what props are built to this spec as when I look through prop information pages I don't find anything about aft rake. I find progressive rake and high rake, just not aft rake. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for my continued questions, I'm just trying to wrap my head around the prop lingo.
Sincerely,
Randy

Re: Prop Advice

The T1 is a Turbo1....high concentration of bow-lift.
I love this prop on this style of rig.

Re: Prop Advice

I don't see this prop on iboats. Am I missing it or do they not not carry it for my motor?
