I am going to purchase both a stern drive and prop lock for my Mercruiser leg. Any suggestions or recommendations would be great.

Thanks

In addition to the locks, tie an angry, inbred, hungry pit-bull to the outdrive with a 6 foot length of chain.

Or, simply remove the outdrive yourself and store it in the garage/basement/whatever. Cover the hole to prevent moisture intrusion. They can't steal what isn't there. It is common practice around my area to store the outdrive if the boat can't be secured in the garage.

I just put locks on my Cobra's as it became a requirement for the insurance company. Try McGard, they have both drive and prop locks, their twin package was good for me because the same key works for either drive. Here is a link McGard Locks

30/30 with a scope works well. Let everyone know you have it and intend on using it if you see someone around your boat. News like that travels fast.

You could just hook up a 240v line to the outdrive. When the lights dim in the house, go outside and remove the charred body before anyone sees it.

Re: Prop and stern drive security?

I just today got a call from the company where I left my two year old boat for service. They asked me where the key for the outdrive lock was. I didn't know I had one, it wasn't mentioned when I bought the boat (new from another dealer), and it wasn't listed on the invoice. They are going to have to chisel the lock off to do the outdrive service. This makes me wonder if the selling dealer did the engine alignment when I took it in for the twenty hour service last year!

The boat is stored next to my house and I'm home much of the time. I live in a safe (so far) neighborhood with some nosey retired neighbors. I have insurance coverage. I wonder if I should replace the lock.

rwidman...why not at least contact the selling dealer, maybe they always put the key in the same place for all boats or maybe they just forgot to give it to you. Check your ins policy to make sure it's not a requirement to have a lock on the drive.

I think I would have seen it if it was on the boat. The insurance policy doesn't mention it. The bad part is I'm probably paying for labor to have it cut off.

Rwidman, I agree with Boatn bob. Tell the dealer/service shop to hault all activity untill you get to the bottom of this. The last thing you need is some over zelous guy with a hammer and chisel or worse, a cutting torch "attacking" your drive. Call the selling dealer, and ask them where the key is ? If they don't know, ask them what brand of locks they used and contact the manufacturer.

Use Sternlock outdrive lock, in my opinion the best, and take the prop off after use
