I'm new to boating as well as to this site. My question is I had my boat out today and when I got home I noticed the cone that covers the nut that holds the prop on is missing. Was planning on taking the boat out Monday. Do I need the cone on? It's an older 90hp Johnson

Re: Prop cone question

Johnson used to have a pinned prop which was a steel pin that went through the prop and shaft. It then had a cover and cotter pin to keep the pin from falling out. From a flow dynamics point of view I doubt it would make any difference. Frank A. over on the Force forum runs some interesting prop combinations and one he has does 65 mph and that blows my mind. He is running a thru hub exhaust prop with a standard Chrysler "cone".

Re: Prop cone question

Thanks for the answer. I've had the boat out a couple times and im doing a lot of reading. Taking things slow and asking alot if questions is definetly helping.

Re: Prop cone question

In looking at the exploded view for the early 90hp motors I don't see any nut and it appears the cone is the only thing holding the pin in place. If no nut then your about to lose your prop.If there is a nut with a cotter pin through it your ok,except I don't know whats holding the pin in place.
Do you have the pointed one piece gear case or the old style blunt 2 piece gear case.
Pictures would help.

Re: Prop cone question

Well if you lost your "cone" and have been out a couple of times and your drive pin is still holding your prop on with nothing holding the drive pin in place you sir are truly living in the never never land.
