what is the difference between 10 1/2 x 13 and 10 3/4 x11 i know the first number is the diameter and the second is the pitch my question is what are the pros and cons of each?

Re: prop diameter and pitch question

Since the diameters are so close, it is not much of a deal with diameter . . .

The pitch is the more important factor. in terms of 'pros' and 'cons' could you erlaborate more on what you are asking?

The larger pitch (13) will want to push more water per revolution than the smaller pitch (11). But. . . depending on what you need, it could be a pro or a con.

Re: prop diameter and pitch question

i have an evinrude 40 hp tiller i want to buy a new prop there are two available im not sure what pitch i have but i dont want to lose any top speed. the hole shot is good now. and i dont want to lose that either. maybe i need to sacrifice one for the other? the boat is 14.5 feet fiberglass and quite heavy i use the tiller instead of the steering wheel so there is more weight towards the back.

i found out my prop is 10 1/2 x 13 and im happy with the way it is but it is getting worn down. so i guess my question is what could change with the smaller pitch?

If the current prop is a good match for your boat, then you should really get another 13" pitch prop.

If you get an 11" pitch, you will loose top end speed, possibly, (con) and possibly over rev the engine (con). You will get better hole shot and low speed performance (pro).

To do this right we need to know your present lightly loaded wot rpm and GPS speed.Year of the motor would be a help as well.
Would help to move the tank and battery forward.
Also you may be able to make or buy a tiller extension to get you in the middle seat.
Though usually heavier than aluminum many times the glass boat will have a faster bottom.
Properly setup it could be faster than if you were up forward.
If the prop is worn you will be better off with a new prop.

Re: prop diameter and pitch question

thanks i was just wanting to know what could happen with the 11 pitch prop. i see now by looking at other threads it can be a complicated issue. my motor claims to run 40 hp at 4500 rpm but im not sure what im running at. my speed is around 27 mph with me in the boat the gas and battery are forward . the motor is a 1976 40hp evinrude model 40604r. just going to stick with what i have now. thanks for the thoughts.
