currently i'm running a generic 21P stainless
prop. My question has to do with prop diameter?
does it matter? anyone one know what the proper
diameter of a prop used on a 93 scarab with a
3.0lx/ alpha drive?
thanks,
Eric :)

Re: prop diameter

Prop Diameter is determined by Blade Design,+ the Engineer who did it.....
Pick the Pitch,+ Blade Style you need... The Diameter will be determined for you....

Agreed.

When you search/browse/read previous posts on props you'll learn, that the normal procedure when dealing with props is

Define what you are not happy with, with your current prop
Know what rpm you achieve at wot and know what the manufacturer recommended range is.
Know your boat make, model and weight, and how you intend to use it.
Then state the facts here and you'll get plenty of advice.

If you like, one place to get a bunch of prop info is here.

I used to run a 3.0 140hp mercruiser in a Baja I once owned, I turned a SS 21p 13.75" dia. WOT was right at 4500-4600 at 56 mph on GPS, 23p 13.50 dia aluminum at 4400-4500 ran at 52 mph.

Re: prop diameter

thanks for the reply's.

Northern Eclipse, A baha is very simular to my 18ft scarab sprint. I have not read it on gps
yet but, i can only manage about 48 fully trimmed and its porpousing then. Max manufacture
range is 4800rpm and i'm turning about 4600 according to my instruments (teleflex)..E

I think you are close with the prop.. see if you can borrow a 21p Quicksiver mirage this is more of a raker type prop, (long ears) so you will need to a least remove your trim tab for a test, because the prop blades will hit the stock one, That is what I used on my old Baja I had to, because the X dimension for my drive was high, I could burn the paint of the leading edges of a stock aluminum using very little trim, the mirage is designed a bit better for holding more trim and running close to the surface, I still use my mirage on my Wellcraft 196 Eclipse with a merc 350 mag and alpha one, because this prop also seems to work well with stern heavy boats also since the longer ears help provide some transom lift, because I certainly do not need any more bow lift, If it is bow lift your looking for then see if you can try a Lazer II, these are designed more for V6 outboards, but can work well with some I/O's also. The Baja was quick due to it hull being what some called a modified v with running pad, but would beat the stuffing out ya in a moderate to heavy chop. I love my Wellcraft for its ride, but its not that much quicker than my old Baja. Overall I don't think your doing bad at 48mph, but a little more tweaking with the prop hopefully you can get 50-52 I think that would be the best you could expect from that package.

Re: prop diameter

northern eclipse,

yes, i agree with you. My buddy just bought a 21P mirage for his baha..he loves it. he pulled
a lazer off it but, its only 19P. I'll have to see if i can borrow his 21P. I have seen it done before and have often condemplated about dropping a 350 mercruiser in my little boat. I think
it would be a fun ride. A few modifiacations involve and it could get pricey considering the cost
of motors and drives. At least with the 3.0 ltr i can run most of the day on a tank of gas.

thanks,
Eric

yep there is always that need for speed, but when you pay at the pumps it could slow you down right now 89 octane is $3.69 cdn, x 40 gallons at about 5 gallons an hour at cruise my 350 is plenty enough right now, Anyway let us know how your prop test go... I have to go a winterize my boat now...
