Good day mates. I have replaced bearings and seals in my 1964 E-rud 28 hp gearcase. I put prop on for dry run and noticed that it does not seat aganist the seal housing. it is about 1/4" away. of course that is with the pin inserted. What can I do to correct this. I am worried about cavatating.
Thanks much.

It is a 10 1/2 x 12 existing prop. Alum. I don't know if it is original or shafts have been changed.

Does it seat differently than before you disassembeled it?

No, I noticed the prop was not seated right compared to the skeg prior to taking apart. The seal housing Pin retaining hole was broken allowing seal to move.

The original prop was to be a 10/38 x 11 1/2 so says the manual.

i did that once and noticed the shaft nut could be put on and the slot for the cotter pin was weighted to one side of the nut - that way, depending on how the nut was put on, one way a little loose, the other way, wicked floppy and clearly an issue. Maybe your putting the nut on upside down? Check to see if the slot for the cotter pin on the nut is closer to one side of the nut than the other.

Thanks, my nut is a cone nut. Only one way on. Did check drive pin and key holes for variation and found none. I talked to the local boat dude and he said the prop rides on the drive pin and should pose no problem. My experience tells me, where there is room for play/movement, you will get movement. I think I will shim with thrust washers the best I can.
Thanks again every body.
