Prop Exchange Question

Do dealers usually take returns or exchanges on props? I'm asking because I just bought a new 14X17 for my boat because I was spinning too many R's, and it's still spinning a bit too high (5100 or so, should be 4200 - 4600). I want to swap it out for a 14X19, I know he has one in stock because we were trying to decide whether to go with the 17 or 19 while I was there. It's got about 15 minutes on it and there ain't a scratch on it. I also degreased the hub completely.

I know that nothing anyone here says really matters since the dealer is going to tell me his policy, but I was just wondering what everyone else's experince was.

Thanks!

Re: Prop Exchange Question

Hello, Dealers usually let you try out a prop and exchange it for a different pitch if the one you tried didn't work out. But....like you said, your dealer's policy may be different. If it is sellable condition I don't see why he wouldn't let you upgrade.

Yeah, that's pretty normal.

Didn't the dealer mention anything about it before you bought it? They're offering that service as a means of creating business so they like to tell about it.

Re: Prop Exchange Question

Bondo, you tell me!

Right now, with 4 people and a full tank at WOT I maxed at about 5100 with the 14X17. Would a 14X21 be a better choice than the 14X19?

Re: Prop Exchange Question

Well,
By the #s, You'd Still be at 4700rpms with the 19" prop.....
If you run Without all the Extra people, You'd be back up around 5000rpms........
I'm Thinking the 21" would get you Down to a more Reasonable rpm..........
IF it's Too Big, Your Man could Beat it down to a 20"............

If your Man will Work With you,
Try Them All............................... :D

Re: Prop Exchange Question

Thanks everyone.

Well I had no problem exchanging the prop. I went with the 19, the dealer said that the mercs will spin the 21 but the cobras are more suited for the 19. He was right. With 4 people on today with the 19, my WOT was about 4200.

On top of that, I can fully plane at about 2800, cruise along at a good clip at 3000-3500, and she really moves along now wide open. Of course today I forgot the GPS but it was definitely quicker on the top end by a good bit. I didn't notice too much of a hit on my holeshot going from the 15 to 17, but going from the 17 to 19 it's definitely lost that 'push you into the seat' accelleration.

This is the right prop, definitely feels like a good match to me.

Thanks again guys.

Re: Prop Exchange Question

i take it we are talking about Alum prop , not stainless right ? Because stainless will gain more on the top end right?

Re: Prop Exchange Question

Yeah it's aluminum. Stainless will give you a little more of everything, since the blades are stiffer. A little more holeshot, and a little more top end. And a little lighter checkbook.

:D
