That all depends on boat size, load, hull design, etc....
To give advice for that, we need an RPM figure at WOT with a known prop.
If you're just installing the motor on a boat, tell us what it is and maybe we can get a starting point.

The boat is a 17 ft 1978 Glastron with a v-hull. Model SSV-176. Load is 2 adults with fishing gear.
The reason I asked is Ijust bought the boat, took it out and it ran for about 1/2 hour with blue smoke the whole time. Wouldn't start after that. I took it to the Mercury shop and he said the part of the prop that goes over the shaft was "spun" and it would cost $160 for a new one. As for the smoke and not starting, he wasn;t sure yet, but the plugs looked burned.

The SSV-176...my first true love...
I'd guess you'll be in the 17-19P range.
Yea, the prop may list for 160, but you can hub it if it's in decent shape for around 50-70 bucks.
What pitch prop is it????
The blue smoke is oil...could be too much in the mix, or overly rich..
You're 224mi. from North Platte...if you were closer, I'd send ya there....1 of the best shops in NE.

I don't know the pitch of the prop. How to I find out what it is?
Yeah North Platte is a ways a away, but I had to take it to Big Springs near Lake MacConoughy about 120 miles, to find someone to work on it. Cabelas was alittle closer, but $20 an hour more.

I spend alot of time on McConaghy...
Anyway, pull the prop nut off and the numbers should be molded into the rear of the hub housing.
