I recently purchased a 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 1988 85hp Force. I desperatly need a new prop. The prop I took off of the motor is a 13 1/2Dia. with a 17 pitch, the book calls for a 13 Dia. with a 19 pitch. (both 3 blade) How do I find out which prop is the right prop for me?

Re: Prop for 1988 Force 85hp

The lower pitch prop that was on the boat will give you a better holeshot and more pulling power for skiing. It will also allow engine to run at slightly higher rpm.

The right prop is the one that allows the engine to run near maximun rpm, 5200, at wide open throttle.

If you lower the pitch one inch, the engine will go about 200 rpm faster. So if you lowered the pitch 6 inches, the rpm would increase 1200, putting your engine into danger, it would soon fail.

If your engine was opperating within the 4800 to 5200 rpm range, I would replace prop with the same pitch.

Props for these engines are getting hard to come by, so don't expect a bargain.
