What pitch was the original prop? Looking for more speed requires that you know what speed and rpm the rig ran at wide open throttle with the original prop. Props need to be selected that puts the engine rpm at the manufacturers recommended max. Increasing pitch with the idea that it will provide more speed is fine in theory, but if the engine is already at it max rpm it will generally hurt both top end as well hole shot, cause "lugging" and possibly cause engine damage. Too little pitch causes over reving at wide open throttle, although hole shot would be better.

Re: Prop for '97 evinrude 35hp

They original prop was alu. 15x10. i am using a ss one now and it is 13x10. i have noticed that the motor runs better with the ss. i get more rpms at wot and little to no oil in the exhaust. with the alu the boat would travel slower and exhaust would drip oil out when in the garage after being used. Should i just keep using the SS prop?? i do not want to ruin the engine. I know i should check rpms at wot but where do i get a tach and how do i hook it up?? And does anyone know what the rpm range for my motor is?? I have no manual. thanks
