1984 Merc 75 HP. Put it forward gear, spun prop by hand CW slight clicking noise, read this is normal, put in reverse gear prop would not spin either direction. Just had motor put on boat have not been to water yet. Is this normal or do I need to get my mechanic back or is this something I can handle

Re: Prop/gearcase Question

It is normal for the prop to click in one direction and lock in the other direction in foward gear. It shoud spin freely in both directions in neutral and it should lock in both directions in reveres. Confirm this to be sure the LU is on correctly.

Re: Prop/gearcase Question

The clicking noise is the overrun clutch which allows you to shut your engine down when your prop is still turning at the speed you were going. R doesn't need it as you usually don't and can't back up very fast. You will also notice as you turn the prop it moves back and forth with respect to the housing when it clicks.
