I have two questions, but first let me state the boat's intended function. I care very little for top speed. I need this boat to be able to pull a slalom skier (28-32mph), wake boarder, or tube comfortably. Also, I cruise at a slow 20-25mph, but might need to cruise around 30mph in smoother water if pulling a slalom skier.

Here is the required information:
1) Performance issue you are trying to correct.

I guess I am torn between pitch and blade count when it comes to pulling a skier. This boat is a ski boat, I care little for top speed. I usually cruise around 20-25mph.

2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless and as a minimum.

Unknown manufacturer or model. It is an aluminum 23p prop.

3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required).

23p 14 ??

4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful)

3900rpm, right around 45mph

5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP

Mercrusier 165hp (Chevy 250 I-6), 1971 Type 1 Drive

6) Boat make model, year, length and weight

1971 Glastron Crestflite V174, 17 feet and 1400lbs empty

Question 1:

What props will work on my outdrive as far as spline count and shaft diameter go? Is the old Type 1 Mercrusier drive the same as an Alpha 1? The reason I ask is on the turning point website the prop selection tool doesn't go all the way back to a 1971 drive or have my model listed. I am choosing a 1983 3.7L 165hp as that is the closest thing they have, but would that prop physically fit my outdrive?

Question 2:

What prop should I use for skiing? The 23P I have on now seems to be a bit sluggish, but is what Mercrusier says I should be running for my boat length, weight, and power in their owner's manual. I had a 19P aluminum on before and it seemed great, but maybe I should go with a 4 blade? The concern is that although I do not care about top speed I might have to pull a slalom skier at 33-35mph for an extended period of time and I don't want to over rev my engine.

Thank you for your help.

Ayuh,... Any prop that fits the Alpha 1, Bravo 1, or the Large gear case Outboard Merc.s....
Will fit your drive....

Sounds like a plain jane 21" is what you're lookin' for.....
