Noticed today at the lake that my prop was "thumping" so, trimmed the motor up and saw metal shavings... Trolled back to the dock, looks like thrush washer was gone, internal hub in prop was damaged. Apparently, the prop moved forward under torque and scraped the lower unit some but, no gear oil leakage of any kind. Do you think that i'll have to replace the lower unit casing? Thanks in advance for replies.

Hi folks, i have a 90hp Mercury, and noticed today at the lake that my prop was "thumping" at idle rpm's so, trimmed the motor up and saw metal shavings around front of prop... Trolled back to the dock, looks like thrush washer was gone, internal hub in prop was damaged. Apparently, the prop moved forward under torque and scraped the lower unit some but, no gear oil leakage of any kind. Do you think that i'll have to replace the lower unit casing? Obviously the prop needs some work, but i'm concerned about the lower unit. Thanks in advance for replies.

Sounds like a bent prop shaft, at any rate a disassembly for inspection would be a good idea,

Please don't start more than one thread on the same issue. Thanks.

Pictures(in focus and good lighting) of the damage to the gear case would be helpful. The prop may or may not be fixable,

I'll try to stick a picture on here of the lower unit. The prop is trashed for sure, it's damaged from slipping forward and hitting the bolts on the top/bottom in front of shaft in the pic. Mechanic at the dealership i spoke with said i probably would be okay. He'll have to replace the carrier and the prop, but the lower unit should be okay...Thoughts??

Thoughts anyone? I'm taking it to the Mercury dealer tomorrow afternoon so, we'll see what the mechanic says if i'm in need of a new lower casing/unit...

Nothing very insightful, just be sure to install a correct thrust washer and any spacers required after the fix.

Nice machining. The gearcase itself should be ok. I'm surprised the carrier, propshaft, and reverse gear are still there
