Prop ID

I just bought a used boat. It came with 2 extra props. One is brass and the previous owner says it was the original prop. It's no good. The other prop is brand new aluminum but the previous owner says it's not for the boat. He says it does have some value though if I wish to sell it. So, how can I identify it, for one, to make sure it won't fit my boat, and so if I do sell it, I know how to list it.

I don't have it in front of me to look for markings, but I can get it if there is markings on it.

If it helps the boat is an 86 Bayliner 2550 with a Volvo Penta outdrive. If nothing else works, I can even post a pic of the prop.

But what about something to signify what sort of drive it fits?

I did. It's hard to read. Looks like it's a Michigan prop. On the hub the only legible numbers are 39-37. There is another set of numbers, but I can't read them. Then between 2 of the blades there is 15L17 and right below it, but written the opposite direction is has "03 B&S 2499" stamped into it. Google has turned up nothing on any of these numbers.

I'll take a stab; educated guess 15L17 is a 15" diameter (you can measure that) by 17" pitch lefthand rotation. Looking at the prop from behind the boat it would rotate counter clock wise to push the boat forward. As I understand it the Volvo can be set for clockwise or counter clockwise rotation. Measure from center of the bore to the tip of a blade and multiply by 2 for diameter.
What motor/hp is it.

Re: Prop ID

Someone posted a method for measuring prop pitch on this forum. Maybe hwsii or someone can direct you to the thread, or just do a search.

Try: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=330932

hwsii was there.

Thanks. I'm more interested in figuring out what outdrive is will fit. I don't know if it's an OMC prop, or Mercruiser, or whatever.

Steelspike, Motor is Volvo 5.7 260hp
