How do I identify what propeller I have installed? Is it stamped on it somewhere?

Yeah, I'm new to the boating world, bought a used boat for what I think is a fair deal. It runs fine, looks good. I downloaded the maintenance manuals to take care of it, and appearently I have a WOT issue. The books says I should be between 4400 and 4800 rpm and I'm getting 5300 to 5400. In fact I never even go that high cause it doesn't feel right. Everything I've read says I have a mismatch between engine and propeller. The guy I bought the boat from told me the prop was changed out, but I didn't ask why.

Can I ask two questions? Is there a glossary somewhere on this forum that explains basic boat terms and/or basic information like the question above? I checked the FAQs here, there was a good article on propellers but I couldn't find anything that explains other terms.

Re: Prop Identification

The prop should be stamped inside the rear area somewhere. It may also be stamped along the outside.

Re: Prop Identification

When you post a question you will get a lot better response if you indicate what boat you have, what motor you have (I/O, outboard, inboard etc) as well as HP and serial number. As for prop ID, look for some numbers between the blades on the barrel or hub of the prop. You will find a manufacturers part number or something like this: 12-1/4 x 15 (12-1/4 inches in diameter and 15 inches of pitch). If you don't see anything on the barrel, remove the prop nut and washer and check the face of the hub for similar information. Yes -- you are overreving the engine by a bunch and need a prop with more pitch. Without some numbers and boat/engine you have we can't begin to help.

OK. Thanks, I'll go look for it.

I hope it's acceptable form to post the boat/engine info in my signature....

That's a good way to do it. You don't have to repeat it for every question you ask. Now look for the prop information.
