Hey all,

I have what may be a stupid question, but it would only be made more stupid if I don't ask right? Is there any danger to the boat if I cruise for a short period of time with the prop up while coming up to the beach in shallow water?

If this question has been answered I apologiz, but I was unable to find anything on it.

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Re: Prop in shallow water

What do you have :)

If its a OUTBOARD you have to leave enough in the water to allow the water pump to work

If its and I/O they have a trim limit to protect the U-JOINTS from damage from turning at to much of and angle

If it is that shallow i just shut it off and walk it in  it is not worth chewing up the prop and sucking muck through the cooling system

Sorry...this info might help. I have a 18' Bayliner with a 4.3 Mercruiser I/O motor.

Doesn't matter what you have -- if the drive is tilted up far enough to run the water pump dry you destroy it and overheat the engine. Do that a few times and you pop a head gasket or crack a block or head any you will be telling yourself, why didn't I just get out and walk it in as was suggested. Otherwise install a water pressure gauge so you can see if the drive is getting water.

If you're running the Drive Higher than the Trim Limit Switch allows,......

You're Stressing the U-joints,+ They'll Fail at the Most Inopportune Time......
Usually with Extreme Catastrophic results.................
