I have a 1991 Mercury Motor (outboard) 40 hp oil injected. The motor starts fine but when I put the boat in gear the prop does not spin. It starts to spin a tiny bit but I can stop it with my hand if need be. Where do I go from here ? :(

Sounds to me like you spun the hub or the shear pin broke. Remove the prop and look for the shear pin. You should be able to get one from your local merc dealer or prop shop.

If you have remote controls on this beast, it may not be adjusted correctly. A spun hub would more likely manifest itself only at higher throttle settings in the water.

I thank you both for your feedback your insight is very helpful. I do not have remote controls for this boat. The boat is a pontoon. Do you think it could have anything to do with the gears ??? I was docking it last night and as I approached the dock I had to throw it in to reverse to avoid hitting another boat. Could this have been the cause of blowing out the hub ???

the only real way you can spin your hub out is if you hit a rock. its a clutch mechanism that merc uses and so does everybody else now i say replace the hub or the prop
