Prop Nomenclature ?

Hello,

I have a 40 HP mer outboard. I am looking into replacing the prop. I have written down the numbers off the prop, they are as follows.

4873140 A4015P

I am thinking that the first set of numbers (4873140) is the current part number for the prop that I have on the motor right now and that the second set (A4015P) is the the dia. and the pitch. I would think that the prop that I have is a 15 pitch, but what does the A40 stand for, something to do with the HP of the motor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Re: Prop Nomenclature ?

The 48 is just the Class the part is in.
(A40) is still just part of the part number
Item part Number is:48-73140A40
Weight: 4.875 lbs of the prop.
Description of prop is: Black MAX 10 1/8 Diameter.
Right hand rotation
15 pitch
MSRP: $151.30

Re: Prop Nomenclature ?

So if I wanted to increase the fuel efficiency of the prop which way would I go with it?

Also if I was looking for more speed where would I go?

Ahhhh - another attempt to double the fuel economy of an outboard. You cannot increase fuel efficiency by increasing the pitch of the prop with the idea that running the engine slower will burn less fuel. In fact quite the opposite will likely occur. To get on plane you will need to apply more throttle than before because now the motor is lugging. Like starting out in second gear in a stick shift car. At wide open throttle the engine will not be able to reach the engine manufacturers recommended wot rpm so again the engine is lugging. If the prop is wrong it is wrong across the board. Props need to be selected to get the engine in the proper rpm band. Speed and economy will be whatever that combination produces. Besides, even if you did succeed in increasing economy, you would not save enough fuel money to pay for the prop.

Or you could read the stickies about how to ask a question, you haven't provided any information that could be used to evaluate your prop or make suggestions for a better one.

I really don't know how much more info you would need. I gave you the size of the motor. You got the dia. and pitch of the prop. You know that it is an outboard. The only thing that I did not include is that it is is on an 14' inflatable that is being used for diving.

The original question was to help me determine what the prop that I had was. That would be the reason that it was not stated in the OP.

As to the cost of the new prop being worth it, I think that I need to replace the prop that I have right now due to nicks and dings in it. So I was trying to find out if there would be a better option for me than the stock one or the one that is on the motor right now. I am not really sure if it is the stock one or not.

So again, would there be any benefit to changing the prop out to a different Dia. / pitch?

What are your WOT numbers (RPM and speed)?
What is the height of the AV plate in relation to the hull bottom?

Dont know the RPM, it is an outboard. As to the speed, last time I checked it I was at 43 MPH in a 16'' Now I am in a 14' so I can not tell you yet.
